On Behalf of Scouts Hereford & Worcester, Kinver Scout Campsite:
We appreciate the thoughts and comments people have shared on various social media channels, as well as the feedback we have received from Kinver residents. We do understand how deeply valued Kinver Scout Camp is within the local community, and more importantly, our wider Scouting community. We fully appreciate the strength of feeling that our announcement has generated.
We are taking care to share information in a timely way where we can, but need to balance this to ensure what we say publicly remains both accurate and constructive. We are striving to be as open and transparent as possible as the situation develops, within operational limitations.
The decision by our trustee board has not been taken lightly. A wide range of factors has informed their decision making. These include, but are not limited to, changes in governance and demand on our volunteer teams. These and many other factors have been considered to lead us to a decision that we hope will guarantee the long-term sustainability of Scouting on our site and the opportunities that it provides for young people.
Moving forward we are actively seeking interested parties to manage the site on our behalf. Our hope is that our young people will continue to enjoy the site, its camping and adventure for a long time to come, in a sustainable way that supports future generations.
To help Kinver’s local community understand the current situation, we want to answer some important questions being raised across numerous forums:
Is the Campsite going to be sold?
Put simply, no. There are no plans to sell the campsite.
Will Scouting on the site remain?
Yes. We have made a clear commitment that the local Scout Group currently using the site will continue to meet where they always have. This commitment has been confirmed at various leadership levels within Herefordshire & Worcestershire and West Mercia Scout Counties and relevant districts.
Will Scout camping on the site remain?
It is our intention to ensure that a sustainable business model continues to support affordable camping for Scouting at the site, in collaboration with any third party we partner with.
Was the campsite gifted to us?
No, the campsite was not gifted. The land was purchased, and payment was made to the original landowner. Initially, the land was made available for use at no cost and was later purchased outright.
Has the campsite been making a loss?
No, the campsite has not operated at a loss for several years. Revenue has fluctuated over time, most notably during the period affected by Covid-19.
